South East Asia’s Most Established International Professional Audio, Lighting, AV, Systems Integration, Music Software & IT and Entertainment Technology Exhibition (Source: Their brochure)

Instead of just exhibiting high-tech toys, or just displaying the latest audio, lighting, projection systems, etc, the organiser has laid out several seminars that meet the needs of various groups of people (I so wanted to go for the Place of Worship seminar).

This event happens once every two years, and it will be in Singapore from 13-15 July 2011 at Marina Bay Sands Singapore. (more details here)

And if I am not wrong, pre-registrations are open til 30 June.

Sadly, I declined this once-in-a-blue-moon offer to be a VIP for a tech event (privileges in the image above). Got some important things to complete on those dates.

Job swap (sound engineers & singers)

I recently did a little swap.

Instead of fulfilling my role as a sound ‘engineer’ behind the awe-inspiring 48-channel mixing board, I had the privilege of being a ‘performer’ on stage. Instead of being the (food) mixer and blender, I was the one being mixed. Instead of being in control, I became the controlled.

Just before this swap, I understood why musicians (guitarists, bassists, drummer, keyboardists, etc) need to hear themselves at a reasonably loud volume to feel the ‘feel’. But of all things, I totally neglected the people with the microphones to their mouths. Through this learning experience, I now understand the requirements of singers or performers who are very dependent on floor monitors up on stage.

The way singers hear themselves when they sing is pretty unique.

  • Similar to how musicians hear their instruments, singers get feedback about their singing through the audio information interpreted by sound waves entering the ear canal.
  • However, singers can hear themselves in another, usually overlooked way – through vibrations propagating through the bones/flesh (similar to how you hear yourself quite loudly when you have blocked ears or the flu).

When the stage sound is ultra loud and overpowering, a singer cannot hear him/herself through his/her ears. The more important feature of hearing through those vibrations in his/her face is also lost which makes it harder to keep in tune.

It is one thing to do up the monitors in such a way that we, the sound engineers, can hear the singer’s voice. It’s another thing to make sure that the monitors are clear enough for the singers, so as to replace those 2 functions.

Point to take away: Audio engineers need to learn how to ‘sing’ (and play instruments as well) too. Then we will know how best to adjust singers’ (and musicians’) monitors. 🙂 Haha, bao kah liaoz.

Hope in this hopeless world

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. (3 John 1:2)

During this season of visitations, good luck, and prosperity, you will still hear sad stories of unforgiveness, bitterness, and just stories of people who are struggling through life because of disunity, hate and what have you.

This world has cracks, is degrading fast and will die in time to come. People, animals, plants, our earthly treasures that we hold so dearly to will all pass away in time to come. Even the ‘smartest’ beings on Earth will not live forever on this green planet.

The stars of the heavens will be dissolved and the sky rolled up like a scroll; all the starry host will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like shriveled figs from the fig tree. (Isaiah 34:4)

The hope in the everlasting, in the never-changing, in the Creator, is the hope that is not in vain. I have come to realise that live on Earth is all but permanent. Loved-ones pass on because of sicknesses, accidents and plain carelessness. What is life? Do I want to waste my life doing things that don’t satisfy me, doing things that don’t matter to me, and most importantly, doing things just for the temporary. So what if I am the richest guy, so what if I have all the cars in the world. Will those benchmarks, achievements and material gains really matter when I die?

Scientists always support processes – always changing, always evolving, never ending. Wouldn’t clinging on to an unchanging foundation be a better choice?

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

I shall stop here for now, before this becomes some 2-hour talk about God. But yea, just had to reflect on this after hearing all those sad recollections and the video above.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Sales: Alby Warehouse Discounts

Alby’s warehouse discounts start tomorrow, and ends this Sunday. Poster explains it all. I bought two PlanetShakers CD/DVDs, and then they start to mail me such stuff. Not bad a sale, but at the wrong time. My school work is piling up really quickly as the semester comes to an end. Organise another sale, please.

They have to do some rebranding too man. I thought they only marketed christian praise&worship CDs/DVDs. 🙂

Psalms 85: an insight

10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. [KJV]

10 Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. [NIV]

10Lovingkindness and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed each other. [NASB]

This verse (various translations above) looks wrong at first glance. The key terms in this verse seem to contradict each other. Recall the Ribena’s disturbing advertisement about Ribena’s purple and yellow blobs flicking stones, and then falling in love. This weird combination applies to the verse above.

How can MERCY and TRUTH, if they are human beings, see eye to eye? How can RIGHTEOUSNESS and PEACE even fall in love with each other.

Mercy speaks of forgiveness, love and being forbearing. Truth speaks of enforcing justice, correction and no deviation from the ‘right’ way. You can’t reconcile these two terms in the world we live in now. It’s hard to correct and judge someone, and yet forgive him/her for the bad deeds done to someone else.  It’s hard to love someone whilst enforcing laws, standards and requirements.

The only ‘worldly’ example of this happens right at home. In normal circumstances, parents will love their own offsprings. Because of that undying love for us (even when we reach 40 years old), they will correct us, they will guide us and nudge us in the right direction through life. However, even though that is the best example I can think of, it is still not a perfect one to illustrate MERCY AND TRUTH. Parents are still mortal beings, and will fail time and again. There is no such thing as perfect love from parents. And the harder question to answer is what is the real truth? Is there a perfect way to raise children?

This process of reconciling both terms MERCY and TRUTH will never end till we die. Still, I thank God for being that perfect example. 🙂
